If you’re a higher performer and a visionary who are extremely intelligent and exceptional at solving problems, and who quietly believe, somewhere, that you should be able to solve yourself too — find the right protocol, the right framework, the right retreat, this post is for you.
Here’s what over a decade taught me:
What you CAN optimize: sleep, gut, VO2 max, routines, systems.
What you CANNOT optimize your way out of: the deeply wired pattern of self-override. The nervous system learned to bypass your own signal to survive, succeed, or stay connected. That lives in the body, not in a framework.
Because the thing underneath all of it is not a performance metric. It is your boundaries.
And boundaries don’t run on discipline. They run on whether some deep part of you feels safe enough to hold a line.
That’s the part the logical mind hates, because it cannot be crushed with “effort” alone.
In fact, effort is often how you avoid it - another system, another stack, another thing to master, so you never have to feel the thing underneath.
But here’s the part that keeps me going, even on the tired days. This is the highest-leverage work there is.
Everything else you’re building - the company, the health, the influence - sits on top of boundaries. Get this layer clean and the rest stops leaking.
Skip it, and you’ll keep paying for it in places that don’t look connected: the deal you resent, the co-founder you avoid, the burnout you can’t explain.
So no, I haven’t “arrived.” I’m in it with you. I just decided a long time ago that the layer everyone skips is the one worth building my work around.
